Great Chocolate Cake with Oreo filling

For Soren’s birthday during the pandemic, we had lots of extra time on our hands. So we made two birthday cakes. This second one was a definite winner. The chocolate cake is extremely easy to make. Ina Garten is well known for this cake. However, the recipe originates from the Hershey cocoa box and is known as “Hershey’s Black Magic Cake”.

I made two batches of this recipe and then used 3 of the 4 layers for Soren’s birthday cake. I filled the layers with “Oreo Cookies & Cream Cake Filling”. Frosted the cake with SMBC. For some reason I haven’t loved SMBC lately.

I built the cake in one of the pans and used a plastic collar. Then I froze the cake for a week. Constructing the cake this way is so much easier than the traditional method.

The 3 layer cake was too tall for our cake dome or cake carrier. Next time I think I’ll make a two layer cake, perhaps torting them into 4 layers. The Oreo filling was fantastic. I used a single batch of it between the 3 layers. For a two layer cake you could try using half a batch.
